The Skull And Cross bones โ ๏ธ
Yes, the skull at the base of the cross represents the skull of Adam in Christian tradition and sacred art. While the general public today associates the skull and crossbones with pirates or toxicity, its roots in Christian iconography date back nearly two thousand years to early Church history.
This specific theological tradition explains the placement and meaning behind the imagery:
1. The Place of the Skull (Golgotha)
The Gospels state that Jesus was crucified at a place called Golgotha (Aramaic) or Calvary (Latin), which translates literally to "The Place of the Skull".
- According to ancient Christian tradition recorded by early Church Fathers like Origen, Jerome, and Saint John Chrysostom, this hill was not just named for its shape; it was believed to be the burial site of Adam, the first man.
2. The Theological Meaning (The Two Adams)
In traditional Christian theology, particularly in the letters of the Apostle Paul, Jesus is referred to as the "Last Adam" or the "Second Adam".
- The First Adam brought sin, fall, and physical death into the world through his disobedience.
- The Second Adam (Jesus) brought life, redemption, and victory over death through his sacrifice on the cross.
Placing Adam's skull directly beneath the feet of Christ visually demonstrates the exact moment the curse of death was broken.
3. The Blood and Redemption Legend
An ancient, non-biblical Christian tradition states that at the moment Jesus died, a massive earthquake split the rock of Golgotha. According to the legend, the blood of Christ flowed down through the crack in the stone and washed over the buried skull of Adam. This served as a powerful visual metaphor for Christ's sacrifice physically washing away the original sin of humanity.
Where This Imagery is Seen Today
- Eastern Orthodox Icons: Nearly every traditional Eastern Orthodox crucifixion icon or crucifix features a small dark cave at the very bottom of the hill containing a skull and crossed bones.
- The Chapel of Adam: Inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, pilgrims can visit the physical Chapel of Adam, which sits directly underneath the rocky outcrop of Calvary where the crosses were held.
- Medieval and Renaissance Art: Countless historic European paintings of the crucifixion include a single skull resting at the baseline of the wooden cross.
โกโก
The original history of the symbol that became the "SS bolts" spans thousands of years and has roots in language, ancient mythology, and early twentieth-century occultism.
Before it was appropriated by the Nazi party, the symbol evolved through three distinct phases:
1. The Ancient Origin: The Sowilo Rune (2nd to 8th Century)
The symbol began as a character in the Elder Futhark, the oldest form of the runic alphabet used by Germanic tribes.
- The Name: It was called Sowilo (in Proto-Germanic) or Sól (in Old Norse).
- The Meaning: It translated literally to "Sun".
- The Concept: In ancient Norse and Germanic poetry, the rune represented warmth, light, life-force, guidance, and the divine power of the sun overcoming winter. It was a completely positive symbol of life and nature.
- The Visual: Its shape (แ) was actually derived from the pre-Roman Old Italic letter "S", which itself came from the Greek letter Sigma (
). It was written with sharp angles because it was meant to be carved into wood, stone, or bone.
2. The Early 1900s Shift: Guido von List and the Sig Rune (1902–1908)
The transition from a peaceful symbol of the sun to a militant symbol began with an Austrian occultist named Guido von List.
- In 1902, List claimed to have a mystical vision of a new 18-rune alphabet, which he called the Armanen Runes.
- List altered the ancient Sowilo (Sun) rune and renamed it the Sig rune. He explicitly changed its meaning from "Sun" to the German word Sieg, which means "Victory".
- He popularized the symbol among nationalistic, romanticized Germanic subcultures as a battle cry for triumph and power.
3. The Graphic Re-Design (1931)
The final step that turned the historic rune into the modern "lightning bolts" happened in 1931.
- Graphic designer Walter Heck, who worked for a uniform manufacturing company, drew two Sig runes side-by-side to represent the abbreviation for the Schutzstaffel (SS).
- Heck flattened the ends and angled the lines specifically to make them look like sharp, militaristic lightning bolts to project dominance and shock value. He was paid a small fee of 2.50 Reichsmarks for the design.
Summary
The original symbol was an ancient letter meaning "Sun". It was re-interpreted in the early 1900s to mean "Victory", and finally paired up and sharpened into "Lightning Bolts" in 1931 to serve as the political insignia for the Nazi regime.
